Word power: The Internet (Pp. 38 – 39)
Objectives:
- My students will be able to understand words related to the Internet.
- My students will be able to understand some useful abbreviations that people use on the Internet and in chat rooms.
- My students will be able to be more familiar with the operation of a computer and the Internet.
- My students will practise and reinforce the vocabulary that they have learnt through reading and completing a letter.
Activities:
1. What do you know about computer English?
Listen to the instruction of the use of some buttons. Identify the words from the Picture above and the table, write them down in your notebook.

- This is the first page of ‘Microsoft’, with links to all the other pages. What do we call this page? (home page)
- On this page, you can find different products by Microsoft. If you want to find information about Office 2007, you can click on the word ‘Office’. So ‘Office’ is a ________. (link)
- And now you are at this page. It is one page of a website. What do we call this page? (web page)
- If you want to stop looking at this page, but you might want to come back to it later, click this icon and the name of the page will stay at the bottom of your screen. If you click on the name again, the page will return to your screen. What is the icon? (minimize)
- You can click on this button to return to a page that you saw earlier. Which button is it? (back arrow)
- This is a program that lets you search a website or the whole Internet to find information. What kind of facility can you use? (search engineer)
- When you find something on the Internet that you want to save, you can download it onto your computer. What do we can this? (download)
- When you finish viewing a page, you can click on this icon at the top right hand corner to exit the page. What is the icon? (close)
2. What other computer English do you know?
Ask my students to give the words or phrases that they know, encourage them to explain how to use the function in English.
Students might mention words related to computers, such as, ‘keyboard, hard drive, screen, printer, mouse, speaker, program, cursor, mouse mat’, etc.
Introduce these words as well.

3. Completing an e-mail
Finish Part C (page 39) according to Parts A and B (page 38). Then, check the answers in class through reading the e-mail out.
4. Abbreviations used in Internet chat rooms
When we chat with friends on the Internet, we don’t always write every word out. Instead, we use some icons or abbreviations. Look at these, can you understand them?
