Unit 3       The world online

Project:     Doing research on the Internet

 

Objectives:

l         My students will read an information sheet about Internet research.

l         My students will learn how to do research on the Internet to look for and find the information wanted.

l         My students will be able to use the words and phrases appeared in the article freely

l         My students will experience the group cooperation when they deal with the project.

 

Language focus:

2.       Fast reading

Read the article on pages 46 and 47.  See if you can find out the answers to these questions:

1)       What is the writing purpose of this article?

2)       What kind of search service is best for the topics you are interested in?

1)       This article provides tips for the readers to help them use the Internet in the best way possible and spend their time doing research on the Internet much more rewarding.

4.       Understanding the article

Read the article again and answer the following questions.  While you are answering, do not refer to your book and try to express with your own words.  Key words of each question are given.

1)     How can you know if the information that you have found is new or old?  (site, bottom)

2)     Personal web pages are not good for doing research.  Then, what kind of page is good for us to do our research?  (manage, trust)

3)     Why should we do cross-checking?  How can we do it?  (proofread, consult, confirm)

4)     If you are asked to do some research on the title ‘transportation in the UK’, what will you put in the search bar of the search engine?

5)     How will you check your information and decide which sites to trust?

Answer:

1)       We can check the dates of the sites.  Most sites will state the date they were last updated at the bottom of the page.

2)       Government pages, or pages managed by organizations and companies you trust are good for doing research.

3)       Not every person proofreads their own writing and correct errors that they made.  So we should check the source of the information we find.  If we find information we are not sure about, consult other web pages to confirm the information.  This is called cross-checking.

Topics to choose:

1.       The most popular mobile phone  (21st Century – April 2, 2008)

2.       The most important Chinese medicine / The use of Chinese medicine in the West

3.       Transportation in the UK / USA

 

-           In groups, my students will decide which topic to choose and then allocate the work.

-           Students can only use the Internet for one hour at school.

-           An English-Chinese dictionary is encouraged to use while searching.

-           The groups will hand in their report.  I will mark the report and ask some groups to present theirs to the whole class.
